West Carthage - Leon F. Getman Sr., 91, of 22 N. Jefferson St. West Carthage died Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at his residence.
Mr. Getman was born in Antwerp on March 19, 1918, the son of the late Ferd and Vina Mallett Getman. He was a 1936 graduate of West Carthage High School. He married the former Ruth L. Hynes on February 14, 1948 in the Rectory of St. James Church. Mrs. Getman, a former secretary for the Crown Zellerbach Corp. died on November 2, 1990. He worked for William Spaulding in the plumbing and heating business in his early years. He formed Getman Plumbing and Heating and operated his business for over twenty years. In 1972 he became an operator of the waste water treatment plant at Fort Drum. He continued there until his retirement in Feb. of 1986.
He was a former Master Mason of F & AM Lodge # 158 of Carthage and was raised on April 14, 1946, a life member of BPOE Lodge # 1762 of Carthage and a life member of Carlowden Country Club, Denmark where he scored a hole-in-one in June of 1992. He was a former member of the Upper Montague Hunting Club. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, cards and reading.
He leaves two daughters and their husbands; Christine and Michael Potter of Tucson, AZ and Grace and Thomas Sauter of West Carthage, two sons and their wives Leon F. and Gaylene Getman Jr. of Herkimer and Russell and Shelley Getman of Fairport, his companion, Eileen Harris of Rutland, 9 Grandchildren, Monica Getman, Shannon Connor, Michael Getman, Brian Getman, Joshua Potter, Blake Potter, Colin Potter, Emily Sauter and Claire Sauter; a daughter-in-law, Kathleen Getman of Little Falls; a brother-in-law; Matthew Hynes of Oil City, PA and a sister-in-law, Belle Getman of West Carthage. He is preceded in death by a son, Gregory John Getman who died in 1954, a sister, Grace Breset and five brothers, John, Franklin, George, Ernest and Robert Getman.
His Funeral will be held on Friday at 8:00 PM at Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home, 518 State St. with Deacon Richard Staab officiating. Burial will be in the St. James Cemetery, Carthage. Family and friends may call at Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home on Friday from 4-8pm. Members of the Elks Lodge # 1762 will conduct a memorial service at 6:30 pm Friday at the funeral home.
