West Carthage - John Fleckenstein, 85, of West Carthage, died Thursday evening, March 12, 2009, at his residence where he was under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County.
Mr. Fleckenstein was born in Subotica, Yugoslavia, the son of the late Peter and the late Maria Schoblocher Fleckenstein. He was educated in Yugoslavia. He served during World War II and was a former prisoner of war. He met his soon to be wife in Austria and they came to the United States in 1956. Mr. Fleckenstein married the former Maria Bachner on August 5, 1956 at Concordia Lutheran Church, Watertown. He worked for the former St. Regis Paper Company in Deferiet in the cutter room until 1964. The couple bought the former Zecher dairy farm on S. Main St. and operated it until a devastating fire in 1969. They then purchased the former Hellinger farm on State Rt. # 26 and operated it until their retirement in 1980.
He was an active ministerial servant with the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses.
He leaves his wife Maria of West Carthage, two daughters: Marianne McGrath of San Diego, CA and Hildy Imperiale of New Hartford, CT, one son: George Fleckenstein of Medford, NY, 9 Grandchildren, 2 Great Grandchildren, three sisters: Theresa Kunser, Rosie Drach and Katie Janke and one brother: Joseph Fleckenstein and several nieces and nephews, all of Germany. He is predeceased by his brother, Tony Fleckenstein who died in World War II.
His Funeral will be held on Saturday at 4:00 PM at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Whitnesses, 28345 State Rt. # 342, Black River with Anthony Hubbard, Elder officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery, Watertown at the family's convenience. The body will be cremated. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home.
