Frances Margaret Phelps
Croghan
Croghan - Frances Margaret Phelps, 98, formerly of Croghan and Black River, died Wednesday morning, April 8, 2009, in the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility, Lowville, where she has resided since August of 2008.
Mrs. Phelps was born in Topeka, Kansas on November 28, 1910, one of seven children of the late Eli and Mary Louise Duval LaMere. She was a 1930 graduate of Carthage High School and Deiberts Private Business School in 1934. She married Glen A. Phelps on August 7, 1938 in Black River. Mr. Phelps died in October of 1951. She worked as a secretary at Fort Drum for many years, retiring in 1972. She lived in Black River for most of her life and moved to Croghan in 2000.
Mrs. Phelps was a member of St. Stephen's Church, North Country Artists Guild Watertown where she won numerous awards for watercolors, a former member of the Deferiet Senior Citizens and the Altar and Rosary Society of St. Paul's Church, Black River.
She leaves a daughter and her husband: Virginia and Charles Wardell of Croghan, a son and his wife, Stephen and Ann Phelps of Palm Harbor, FL, 2 Grandchildren, 3 Great Grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A daughter died in infancy.
Her Funeral will be held on Friday, April 17th at 11:00 AM at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Croghan with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Gouverneur. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home, Carthage.
