Alfred L. Fortini
West Carthage
Alfred L. Fortini, 79, of 113 Bridge St. West Carthage, died Friday evening, April 17, 2009, in the Samaritan Keep Home, Watertown where he has resided for two months.
Mr. Fortini was born in Brooklyn, NY on July 1, 1929, the son of the late Nicholas and Adele Maziarz Fortini. He attended school in Brooklyn. He served in the Army from 10/30/45 to 01/27/56. He served with the military police and was in charge of prisoners of war in his early career. He later served in Austria, Germany, Japan and Korea with the 24th Infantry Division. He received numerous decorations and medals. After his discharge in 1956 from the Army, he was employed at Carthage Papermakers as a papermaker, tow motor operator, truck driver and maintenance for 13 1/2 years. He married the former June R. Baxter on July 16, 1954 in Carthage. In February of 1969 he began work at Griffiss AFB in Rome as a federal police officer. He retired from there in 1990.
He was a member of the American Legion Post # 789 of Carthage, the VFW Post # 7227 of Carthage and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.
He leaves his wife, June R. of West Carthage, a step son, Jerry LaRock of West Carthage and a step daughter, Deanna Forney of New Port Richey, FL.
His Funeral will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 AM at Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home, 518 State St. with the Rev. George F. Maroun, Pastor of St. James Church officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Champion. Calling hours will be on Monday from 4-7 pm at the funeral home.
