    Fishing.

Here are some photos of ice fishing on Crystal Lake Sunday the 15th of February.

This group was having a good time catching perch and some very nice Northern Pike.

Here is one way to fish through the ice. The bait is a fish eye cut from a fish caught earlier. My question is where do you get the original fish eye?

These pike are kept fresh under the ice by running a metal stringer through the mouth and gills. About the length of a mans arm they probably weigh 8 to 10 pounds each. northern-pike1tmb.jpg - 15.6 K

This was a perfect day with temperatures in the 20s, not much wind and bright sun shine. There were a number of parties fishing the lake this day, mostly within 100 feet of shore.

Even thought the near by Theresa Fire Department was holding the annual "Open Borders Ice Fishing Derby" these fisher men and women chose instead to just fish for the fun of it ...and of course the fish.
They said the pike is very good when beer battered and fried.

This is a real nice pile of fresh caught perch, average size 8 inches. There are enough here and around the other holes for a few perch feeds. With the price of fish these days it makes sense to catch your own.

This perch is "just caught" using a short rod, small hook and fish eyes.

The neat holes are cut with a power auger. The ice this day was at least a foot thick. This fish, too small to eat was released but chose to loaf around instead of swimming away.
